One of my all time favourites.
I built this many, many years ago, and I still can't quite
believe I managed to pull off this paint job.
I have a couple more of these Meikraft D.lllas and, despite
their limited run nature, they're really very nice. Perhaps
not surprising considering that, as far as I know, they're
a direct copy of the Czech Masters resin kit. It would
appear that MAC Distribution has either copied this kit
or they now own the original Meikraft moulds, as both
this and the Pfalz D.III appear in their boxes.
I added detail to the cockpit
and replaced the radiator hoses and landing gear legs
with brass rod. The propellor was carved from two pieces
of 1/16th inch plywood laminated together, with the spinner
plunge-moulded using the kit item as a master. Rigging
is stretched sprue, the engine and guns are from Aeroclub.
The lozenge camouflage is from Almark which, in retrospect,
looks like it was based on the "night" colours to me.
It's funny how all the decal manufacturers say their lozenge
fabric is authentic and based on actual specimens, and
yet they're all completely different! I'm not sure if
there really was that much variation in the actual fabric
colours or if the decal companies are just on flights
of fancy, so to speak.
Markings depict the aircraft
flown by Ltn. Erich Kaus of Jasta 30. Kit decals were
used with the exception of the upper and lower wing Balkenkreuz
which were cut from Microscale black and white decal sheets.
