Revell-Monogram 1/24 Pie Wagon

One of my all time favourite Tom Daniel cars when I were but a wee lad. Back then, it was moulded in the appropriate colours and had both chrome and brass plated parts, so even a simple-minded child such as myself could end up with a pretty reasonable result. And it has pies - what's not to like?

Originally produced by Monogram way back in 1968, it has had many incarnations over the decades. This particular model was made from the 1997 Revell-Monogram release. Gone is the authentic Panther Pink plastic along with the brass plated parts, this issue has everything moulded in white and all the plated parts are in chrome only.

I painted mine with Testors Model Master Panther Pink. All the chrome plating was stripped and the parts were then refinished with Metalizer Brass and Alclad Chrome as appropriate to the original issue. Tamiya Gold was used for the engine and Bare Metal Gold foil was used for the door handles and hinges.

RM's decals were absolutely horrendous (see construction page), so masks were created and the markings were painted on. These masks are available from my Thunderbird Models online shop.

Mmm... pastries. Somehow I managed to lose the license plate holder, which I'm hoping is a temporary situation. If and when it turns up I'll add this later along with the license plate decal. Or I'll just make a new one.

I did the bottom in Humbrol Satin Oak with water soluble pencils for the woodgrain, finished off with a light coat of Tamiya Clear Orange. It didn't turn out quite as "woodlike" as I had hoped, but how often is the bottom seen anyway? The exhaust pipes are a bit close to the rear tires, possibly I pushed the rear end a bit too far forward. Oops.

The rear door fits very poorly in the closed position, but it does open to show off those delicious pies.

I added spark plug wires which fit into holes drilled in the valve covers and into plastic rod for the wiring looms. The carb intakes were cut off and hollowed out before painting in Panther Pink and gluing back on to the intake stacks. Exhausts were drilled out and painted Tamiya Flat White.
